Seeking retiree volunteers for PC PALS Program

May 24, 2024

Last modified on May 24, 2024

Interested in giving up less than 1 hour a week for “PC Pals”?

We have a well-established volunteer team and have been so successful, the class is expanding so we need a few more volunteers!

What is it? We match an adult and a student from the 7th/8th-grade Leadership class at Markham Middle School, a Title 1 school in Placerville (near the Folsom, CA campus).

During the school year, you email back and forth twice a week. You discuss various topics, including their academics, outside-of-school activities, and leadership activities at their middle school. Activities include dances, spirit days, school-wide pep rallies, and activity days.

What it benefits? Not only does this help the students practice their writing, but it’s also an opportunity for us to inspire and educate them about STEM topics. By discussing these subjects, we increase their exposure to math, science, and technology and build future career aspirations in these fields.

Your participation earns the school up to $15,000 a school year. The money is allocated to the Robotics & Leadership elective classes, their activities, and the Art, Music, and Drama departments.

What is the ask? You write 2 weekly emails to your student who reads them in class Tues/Thur ~11am. Emails are a minimum of 3-7 sentences long, and topic ideas are provided throughout the school year.

What’s the time commitment? We begin emailing students in mid-September and end in mid-May 2025, with time off for all school holidays. If you have trips planned and cannot email every week, please let us know, and we will fill in for those times so your student isn’t left with an empty inbox.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Lee Miller at Ringoboy53@outlook.com if you wish to volunteer or have questions. Thanks for considering PC PALS!
